story.

- regret; a feeling of sorrow or remorse for a fault, act, loss, disappointment, etc. -

Sora. Bright like the sky he was named after and sweet like the apple that has been freshly picked. Gullible and easily deceived. Yet not once had he thought that someone so kind like Kairi could be so malicious beneath her soft smile.

[ Is happiness what you seek? ]

Startled by the voice, a confused and dazed Sora looked up to see a girl standing before him. The ocean crashed all around him, and yet he couldn’t seem to understand. He had washed ashore on the current and Kairi – who had happened to be collecting shells – found him. He had never seen such a place before. It was so exotic, so new… and the girl before him, so gentle and beautiful.

[ Come. I’ll take you there. ]

Her words so delicate and so sweetly woven easily bought him. It wasn’t hard to convince him to go with her.

[ Y-yeah!
Let’s go. ]

That was the beginning.

Even though only a few days had passed since their first meeting, Sora had already fallen for the girl’s charms. Having spent the entire day prior in the hidden cave, Kairi decided to see for herself what had intrigued him so.

She saw it as soon as she entered.

There, on the stone wall was a drawing of both her and Sora – presumably – with Sora giving her a paopu fruit. Startled at first, then softened by the sweetness, Kairi touched the sketching. Sora, who had been looking for Kairi ran in on her. Her back turned to him, she contemplated over what to say before slowly turning around, her face sorrowful.

[ Kairi? ]

Forcing herself to not sound sad, she invited Sora to come to her house. Confused at her sudden offer, but quite humbled and honored by it, he immediately accepted. However, he realized that her intentions weren’t quite what he had planned. Instead she invited in another boy, one that she claimed to love as well. Kairi had wanted to keep both boys to herself in secret, but regret and guilt had forced her to admit to it.

The silver haired boy seemed like a savior to the hurt Sora at the time. And even though Kairi suggested that they continue to live their life as normal, Sora could never go back to it. Riku extended a hand, offering him a place of reassurance. It was only natural to accept, leaving Kairi behind with no one.

Time went by as the two boys spent their time together. Sora had finally learned what love truly was. He figured that this was finally something that he could trust, something that would last forever.

But he was wrong.

He and Riku had arranged to meet in an alley. It was just going to be the two of them, but as he was traveling on the train and looking at the crystal that Riku had given him, a sense of dread washed over him. He remembered of Roxas, who had tried to fight Riku before but Sora had intervened and drove him off. Startled, he tried to shake off the feeling and instead tried to fill his mind with pictures of Riku.

Riku stood alone waiting for Sora to come. Normally he was never the first one there, so this surprised him slightly, but he brushed it off as nothing. He stood looking to where he knew his love would come, his back turned to the darkness that lurked behind him. Roxas, consumed by jealousy, advanced towards him, his Keyblade ready. When Riku had realized that Roxas was approaching him, it was too late. Retreating back into the shadows to wait for Sora, Roxas watched Riku as he took his last, final breath.

Sora, who had been walking towards the alley stopped and looked in shock. There, lying before him was Riku. He rushed over only to touch Riku’s cold, dead body. Distraught and in despair, he was at a loss until Roxas approached him, telling him that he could love him now that Riku was out of the picture. Angry, Sora turned towards Roxas.

[ I loved only him! ]

Roxas had not expected this kind of reply, and was taken aback by Sora’s outburst.

[ W-what are you saying? ]

Filled with hatred towards the blond-haired boy, Sora called forth his Keyblade. Vengeance was the only thing left on his lonely mind. Roxas was filled with pain and felt so betrayed by his love. It drove him to madness and he too summoned his Keyblade. He rushed forward and swung at Sora. As the boy dropped to the ground murdered, the rain fell and Roxas walked away.

Riku stood behind a closing door. Sora stood apart from him, reaching out towards his love. The silver-haired boy told Sora that he had no regrets as the door closed and disappeared forever, leaving Sora alone to fall into darkness.

Roxas pulled out the blue crystal that he had taken from Sora’s dead body before he left. He gazed at it and a flashback of Sora’s took over his body. It was of Riku, handing Sora a bag that contained the crystal inside. When the flashback faded, an image of Riku appeared on the crystal, shocking Roxas into dropping it. Sora bent over to pick it up, and Roxas smiled upon seeing him, but then he faded away.

It was only his imagination.

Now Roxas was the one who suffered still, alone in the world. He regretted what he had done, and knew that his sins would haunt him forever. A tear fell from his face. He cried for what he had lost, what Riku had lost, what Sora had lost; for all his sins and his regrets, and for his never-ending loneliness.

- loneliness… is a fatal disease… -
